"We Should Keep Ourselves Beautiful at Every Age!"

From a few months ago: Me and my mom, whom I think is the most beautiful woman I know.

In my latin culture, a woman is supposed to age gracefully and stay beautiful her entire life. However, here in America, women believe that when they hit 40 it's over for them. Many times I've had women sit in my chair saying that since they have hit a certain age in their life that they feel the need to cut off their hair and be conservative in their dress. As a younger hair dresser, I would think "Weird, all my aunts were so beautiful, cared for their appearance and wore heels well into their 50's." I'm in my 40's now and I say, "Heck  NO!" to that! It's not ok for women to feel that they cannot be sexy at a certain age. I'm not saying show EVERYTHING or act like the women in the Real Desperate Housewives of Orange County who dress like they ARE 20. As if the tight jeans and overly tanned face will hide the 25 years of smoking, drinking and sun damage. You can be beautiful no matter how old you are-whether you're 20 or 90. You can be sexy and attractive no matter what.  Never throw away your pink lipstick or that little black dress, or even consider cutting your hair off like Conan O'Brian just because you've "hit that certain age."

I find it funny that sexy is for twenty something's. I think as we get older we understand our bodies better. When I was younger, I actually had no Idea what I was doing with my body or some of out fits in the name of sexy. It wasn't until I had my first child that I began to understand my body and myself. I understood what it meant to be sexy, became more confident with my body and sexuality and began to feel like a woman and not a girl anymore. In Europe they believe that women are even more desirable after 30! I think America is the only country obsessed with the age to beauty and sexiness issue. It can be the Puritanistic beginnings of this country. It can be that the media needs to think that Brooklyn Decker is only this sexy bombshell and that she can't open up her mouth or sound intelligent, empowered, and independently secure. Sadly, I think that after you pass your mid-30s that's exactly how a woman sounds. Why can't a beautiful and sexy women be intelligent? Actually, why does an intellectual older woman feel that she can't be sexy?!  Education and life experiences bring confidence and knowledge to everyone. You can have the best of both: Being an intelligent woman who looks and feels sexy in her own skin. Don't use the excuse that you're too old or too busy with work and the family; Always make time for yourself! And never ever let your self go, no excuses. We are the beautiful in this planet Earth. We must be beautiful for ourselves, for our babies, for our mates, for life. Oh! and don't forget to moisturize!

Confessions From The Chair: 3 Things To Watch Out For








       "I need space."Maybe I should get my own place.
 "I'm depressed."I don't want to bring you down too.
"No,I'm not dieting."The weight is just dropping off.




After talking to women for over 25 years behind the chair, I start to see certain patterns with the same inevitable outcome and reason. I have learned something about men who are ready to leap away from their marriages or families.  This man reminds me a bit of my labrador. I should add that I love my Newton. I don't think men mean to be this way but they become selfish and one track minded, yet they are also very practical and visual-- with very short attention spans. Some times my Newi would run away from home.He was looking for something new to conquer , chasing down a new smell-- looking for some exciting adventure. 



They're not going to break up a home and create 10 million problems to unravel a marriage unless there is some sort of big payoff.                                (My dog, Newton)

So, ladies!...when your lovely man comes home and tells you any of those 3 believable lines, you can be assured that they think they are in love with another woman (or man). It is at this very moment that a woman needs to think with absolute clarity as she preceeds to go deaf, dumb and blind. She will SWEAR up and down to me, her hairdresser, that there's not someone else in the equation.  


I tell you this right here, in 99.9% of these stories, there has only been one man that was an exception to this rule. But actually, he never even moved out or packed anything. And when left home alone he committed suicide because he was in fact, depressed. 
I say, fight for your family. Don't let him walk so easily. Do everything in your power to make it go right. After the ecstacy is gone, 99.9% want to come back home...just like my Newton.

I started working with hair when I was 4 years old at my Mother's salon. I had planned to be a Marine Biologist. To put my self through College I decided instead of waitressing, I would do what I already did with my eyes closed, hair. Went to Beauty school & college simultaneously, got my license, and thought I was the IT girl in hairdressing. I had been doing hair at mom's forever in Colombia & USA both for latin women. They were impressed with the daughter of the owner. When I was 19, I decided that I wanted to see how the other half lived, and my English had gotten better. I  began working with a large chain called Heidi's, with 47 stores across the states. "Of course in two months I would become one of the art directors and travel all over the states showing other girls how it is done!" Instead I was hired as an apprentice, I figured they needed to warm up to my talent for I was too young, and thought that because I had an accent, I would cut with one. I was placed in the hands of a master trainer, Mark Anthony. Who looked at me and said "You will be my protege, do not dissapoint me." In my head I said,"It's me Has, It's in the bag. Please."

Hair by Hasblady Guzman                     On the first day he threw away all that was in my new shiny bag in the trash, and he said to me, "I'm going to get rid of all your bad habits. Get off your high heels, color your hair brown, and keep it neatly in a pony tail. NO more make up than gloss, nails manicured, no acrylics. You are to be here 30 min before me with my coffee waiting, and you will stand by me holding a comb incase I drop the one I am working with. You may leave only after I have left, and leave my station neat and update my client files." I also had homework. As I arrived home I was to tape 3 fingers on my right hand with my scissors on. Of this he would say "Practice till it hurts, do it till you cannot do it anymore, and after that, keep doing it." He would have me, "blow dry the hair with a 9 row Denman brush." Finally, after my fingers were bleeding from all the heat, he would say to me "Now you're doing it right. You are holding the brush and blow dryer correctly." Of course this princess would have walked out laughing the first day to never come back.

His skill was that of an architect, his blow drys impeccable mirrors of shine. His demeanor by the chair. He elevated our profession to that of a doctor. And to learn that I was willing to surrender all of who I was for what I could become. Was it painful? YES. Was it worth it? Every grueling minute of it. In the end I was his best product, I did not know I was his first trainee. He trained me like they do in Europe-- no mercy, no pain, no glory. He had been trained by Vidal Sasson him self.  I had been under mom's loving tutelage, after I saw his first hair cut, I never looked back. I went on to train in London, Spain, NY, & Miami. I have strived to master all there is to know in this craft. I have worked on New York Fashion Week, TV, movies, music videos, celebrities..etc. Yet-- I feel like that first day of training-- in fact I have been groomed to feel that I'm only just starting out, and a blister reminds me that I've done a good job today.
